Dr. Alfred Sofer is the first in Fairfield county to have the advanced technology of Vectra 3D imaging to help discuss what procedures are best for his patients. This imaging system will allow the patient to have an idea of what to expect after surgery and reduce some of the pre-surgical concerns that maybe associated with size and type of implant. With this new technology Dr. Sofer can give his patient a realistic expectation.

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts using silicone or saline breast implants.

What is a basic description of Breast augmentation procedure?

Dr. Sofer will make a small incision and create a "pocket," or space within your breast tissues, for the breast implant. The breast implant will be placed in the pocket and positioned. Then the incision will be closed with stitches.

Where is the breast surgery performed?

Breast augmentation is most frequently performed on an outpatient basis in a hospital operating room, or surgery center.

How long does the breast implant procedure take?

On average, the surgery lasts one to two hours.

What anesthesia will be used for Breast Augmentation?

General anesthesia is commonly used.

What are the incision site options?

With incision sites, the goal is always to choose the option that will result in the least obvious scar. There are three common incision sites used for breast augmentation: under the arm (transaxillary), around the nipple (periareolar), or within the breast fold (inframammary).

Where are implants placed in the breasts?

Breast implants may be placed sub-glandular, which is between the chest muscle and the breast tissue, or sub-muscular, which is below the chest muscle.

Sub-glandular Breast Implant Placement

Sub-glandular placement may make your surgery and recovery time shorter. It may be less painful and it may make the implant easier to access if re-operation is necessary. This placement also may make it easier to see and feel your implants through your skin after your surgery. Capsular contracture is more likely with sub-glandular placement, and imaging of the breast with mammography may be more difficult.

Sub-muscular Breast Implant Placement

The sub-muscular placement may make surgery last longer, may make recovery longer, may be more painful, and may make it more difficult to have some re-operation procedures than the sub-glandular placement. The possible benefits of this placement are that it may result in less palpable implants, less capsular contracture, and easier imaging of the breast with mammography.

Breast Augmentation can improve the proportion of the breasts to body type, provide symmetry to asymmetrical breasts, and enlarge and reshape breasts that have lost fullness and projection due to weight loss, pregnancy, breast feeding, or age. Breast augmentation is often performed for reconstructive purposes on patients who have undergone a mastectomy or have a congenital breast deformity. This surgery can elevate self esteem and improve the physical self-image.

Who is good candidate for Breast Augmentation?

• Patients who are unhappy and/or self conscious about the size and/or shape of their breasts.

• Patients who have lost volume and projection due to pregnancy, weight loss or age.

• Patients who have asymmetrical breasts (breasts of different size or shape).

• Patients who have hereditary abnormalities in one or both breasts.
